This statement is only partly true though.

Before you invest time and money into an education and certification, take a moment to investigate this field and its potential a little more.

Myth 1: Coding is Easy

Most individuals who hear about medical coding for the first time believe that it is easy to learn and/or perform. Most individuals who have attempted to learn, or who do medical coding would disagree.

To be a medical coder you must be very detail oriented and organized.

Medical coders must also have a broad knowledge base of medical billing, medical terminology, gross anatomy, insurance policies, practice management, coding guidelines, HIPPA regulations, how to use each coding manual, and more.

In addition to being knowledgeable, medical coders must also have the ability to read and understand detailed, lengthy medical records and operative notes. Communication skill with physicians and insurance companies are also imperative.

Myth 2: Work from Home

Many individuals hear that medical coders work from home and so they enter this field based on this alone.

While many individuals do medical coding do from home, there is more to it than what if often advertised.

In order to do medical coding from home individuals must first become certified as either a CPC or CCS. Following certification individuals must then gain on the job experience.

The majority of companies that allow medical coding from home require 2-3 years of on the job experience as a minimum.

Most coders who do medical coding from home are also independent contractors. Independent contracting should also be researched and considered prior to investing in this career.

Myth 3: Data Entry Job

Medical coding is a learned skill. The only thing data entry and medical coding have in common are the fact that both utilize 10 key.

Performing medical coding requires a knowledgeable individual to first read, interpret, and understand the medical record and/or operative note. They must then determine what information is pertinent and what is not. The pertinent information must then be translated into codes by utilizing three large manuals.

Translating this information into codes requires medical coders to know how to use the coding manuals as well as apply coding guidelines which determine things like; when a code can and cannot be used, sequencing multiple codes in the correct order, linking codes with other codes, when multiple codes are required for a single piece of information, etc. etc.

Medical coders must also know insurance specific coding guidelines as well and determine which guidelines should be applied in each situation.

Myth 4: Little Requirements

The government has not yet mandated any specific requirements that one must first meet in order to be a medical coder.

However, employers have taken action of their own. The majority of employers will not hire an individual as a medical coder without at least a CPC or CCS certification. Many employers also require at least some on the job experience in addition to this as well.

Individuals who wish to become a medical coder and/or do medical coding from home must make themselves employable.

To become employable in this field, individuals must follow a career path similar to those of many other careers.

Proper education is the best place to start. Taking a medical terminology and gross anatomy course should be the first step, followed by taking a medical coding course that will specifically prepare you for one of the two certification exams.

Once education has been obtained individuals must then sit for either the CPC exam that is offered by the AAPC, or for the CCS exam offered by AHIMA. Any other "medical coding certification" will not be recognized by employers.

After earning either the CPC or CCS credential individuals must then gain on the job experience. Similar to most other careers, starting out as a medical coder will require individuals to start in entry level positions and work their way up.

Due to the sensitivity of this work and the direct impact it has on revenue inflow and reimbursement, often newly certified coders find they must take unrelated positions while they learn from the medical coders in the coding department. Only after they have proven themselves do they begin to gain medical coding duties and receive promotions.

Working as a front desk receptionist in a physician's office, working in the medical records department, or doing data entry in the medical billing department are common ways newly certified medical coders start out.

Myth 5: High Earning Potential

Earning potential varies due to many factors, such as geographic location, years of experience, type of specialty, economics, etc.

Starting out as a medical coder in an entry level position often pays very little.

If individuals are able to stick it out though, earn a less than desired pay, and gain that critical 2-3 years of experience, the flood gate will swing wide open.

Currently the medical coding field is experiencing something of a phenomenon. The market is lacking in experienced medical coders and positions are going un-fulfilled. This is causing employers to offer a high rate of pay in order to bring experienced workers into their organization.

In response to this need many individuals have taken educational courses and earned their certification. This action has caused an over saturation of newly inexperienced coders in the job market.

Newly certified coders are finding that gaining their first coding job is becoming a competition. In addition, entry level positions that they are seeking are also being filled by over qualified experienced individuals due to a sluggish economy.

As a result, newly certified coders are becoming disgruntled due to the fact that they have incurred expensive education, invested time, and cannot afford to invest more in a low paying position.

In the current market, gaining the first medical coding job is the key. If a newly certified coder can obtain an entry level position, do whatever is required of them, and earn the 2-3 years of experience employers are looking for, there will be no limit to both your career and income potential.

Example: Personally, I started out as a front desk receptionist. My first entry level coding job paid $10 -$12 per. hour. After gaining the required experience I chose to do medical coding from home where I earn over $50 per. hour.

In conclusion, medical coding is not exactly the "easy work from home, data entry job that has little requirements and high earning potential" career that it is often sold as, but there are some truths to this statement.

Medical coding is similar to most other careers, requiring education, dedication, hard work, and expertise. The harder one works the more they will succeed.

For those who have the single goal of doing medical coding from home, remember to research this field prior to investing time and money. Ensure this is the right job fit for you and that you can and are willing to make the necessary requirements to become a medical coder.

About the Author: 10 year of medical billing and coding experience, home based ER coder, a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and Certified Professional Coder Hospital (CPC-H), the local AAPC Norwalk Chapter founder and president, a Coding instructor and tutor, and founder of the educational website http://www.medicalbillingandmedicalcoding.com which provides career options, educational advice, and answers to common questions for those starting out in the medical billing and coding fields.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Kristy_Rodecker

How To Choose The Right Medical Billing And Coding Online School

     By Mark Wellman

Medical billing and coding online schools are currently being advertised in every corner of the internet as well as in medical trade journals, on television, and in the career sections of major newspapers. The jury seems to be out as to whether online training is as comprehensive and as valuable in terms of marketability as their in classroom college and university counterparts. My conclusion is that there are quality variances in both and the onus is on the prospective students to perform their due diligence prior to to making a financial and time commitment to either.

Billing and coding schools online are often an extension of an accredited college or university and offer programs which essentially echo the curriculum which they provide within the classroom setting. These programs are generally developed with a community atmosphere in mind, and in turn making the student feel as though they are part of a group with the same educational goals, even though colleagues and fellow students may be thousands of miles away. They achieve this through new technologies by creating private chat rooms and forums, as well as providing toll-free and email support.

Prior to evaluating the medical billing and coding online schools, the prospective student must perform a thorough evaluation of themselves. Here, it is important to take a good hard look at where they are at in terms of skill level, education, as well as practical work experience, and in turn identify short and long term career goals. This is where a person can determine whether they have a desire to focus on medical billing, medical coding, or a combination of both. Many educational institutions offer a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist accreditation which provides the best of both worlds.

Once this is complete, the next step is to compile a list of schools providing online billing and coding training. The fastest and easiest method is to search the internet and copy and paste the URL's into a notepad on the computer. Next start viewing the websites of each online educational institution with the intent of locating medical billing and coding programs which match the career goals previously established. While doing this copy and paste to your notepad pertinent information which tends to stand out as well as toll-free numbers and email addresses which can be easily accessed later in the process.

Some of the things to look for are educational and work experience prerequisites, certifications offered, post graduate placement services, course length, price, financing options, and naturally course curriculum. In addition, look for any short term incentives such as a free laptop computer or no interest financing. The goal here is to identify 3-4 schools which seem to be in line with your own personal situation, career goals, and aspirations.

Now for each of the medical billing and coding online schools, list all of the pros, cons, and most importantly any questions which arose during research process. Set aside a few hours and begin calling the toll-free numbers. A program representative will likely answer the telephone and be available to address all of your questions.

Take special note of the level of professionalism, knowledge of the programs offered, and overall attitude about the school. Remember that the program representatives act as the main marketing arm of the school, and if you do not have a good positive feeling after speaking with them, it will likely reflect the level of commitment and service you will receive after enrollment.

A quick word about price. The lowest price is not necessarily the best option and the highest price does not always provide the most value. It is extremely important to look at the entire package, the overall picture if you will.

If for example, a particular school has gained a good reputation within the medical billing and coding industry, and has strong factual statistics indicating that their graduate students obtain the highest paying jobs quickly, it is worth paying a premium as the additional cost will be recouped very quickly. With a certification from a school which is not recognized within the industry may take much longer to find a suitable position.

Finally, analyze all of the information gathered during the research phase and choose the medical billing and coding online school which best suits your own unique situation and addresses your specific needs. If question are still unanswered, contact the schools again and ensure you get the answers you want. If you are torn between two online schools, go with your gut feeling. Make the decision and give it your all. It will truly be the basis for a long, prosperous, and exciting career in the ever expanding field of medical billing and coding.

Choosing the right medical billing and coding online schools is something which should not be taken lightly. Getting the proper medical billing and coding certification at the outset will prepare you for a long, prosperous, and rewarding career.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Mark_Wellman

Top 10 Work From Home Careers

     By Nancy F Higgins

If you have been scouring the Sunday newspaper and the Internet for work from home opportunities, you should probably know that you are not the only one. Increasingly, people have been looking for opportunities that allow them to work from a remote location, which in most cases is their home.

Their reasons for seeking such opportunities may be different. Some are victims of circumstances while others make a choice, but the motivation behind their pursuit is the same - greater flexibility, minimal or no commute, more time for family, and the likes.

Well, your search for genuine work-at-home jobs ends here because we have complied for you a list of top 10 home-based careers.

Medical Transcription: It's perhaps one of the most popular, but also often misunderstood work-at-home career. Many people make the mistake of thinking that just about anyone can take a shot at medical transcription. After all how difficult can listening to recordings and typing them out be? But that couldn't be further off from the truth. The job is quite complex and hard to break into without formal medical transcriptionist training or prior clinical experience. Courses in medical transcription can be completed at career and community colleges or vocational schools.

Medical Coding & Billing: An important part of health information management, medical coding and billing involves assigning international codes to all the procedures that are performed in a healthcare unit and using codified documents for billing private health insurance carriers and the government. This job requires knowledge of different coding standards, medical terminology, pharmacology, anatomy, medical record format, etc. The best way to gain this knowledge is through a medical billing and coding course from a vocational school or a health information degree from a four-year college or university.

Web Design & Development: Almost all businesses, from the smallest entity to the biggest corporate, now have a presence on the web. This has created a demand for people who can develop and design websites and web applications. Depending on your training, you could either be involved in the front end design and layout of a website or writing the backend code that serves visual and textual content on a website. Often companies, especially smaller ones, hire freelance designers and developers to create their online properties.

Virtual Assistance: When the whole world is going virtual, why should administrative support services be left behind? Yes, that's right. It's possible to perform a variety of admin and clerical tasks remotely using a computer, high-speed Internet connection, telephone, and a fax machine. Job prerequisites may not be much on paper, but completing administrative assistant training from a vocational school will do your chances no harm. What will further boost your marketability is a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification. This may necessitate further training in Microsoft Office courses.

Translation: Globalization has created a demand for multi-lingual people like never before. As countries continue on the path of aggressive business, cultural and political exchange, the need for professionals who can remove the language barrier between them has increased. These professionals translate a multitude of written materials from one language to another and are required to understand not just the subject at hand, but also cultural nuances of the countries to which these languages be long.

Accountant: Accountants perform a variety of tasks for individuals and businesses including tax consulting, financial planning, payroll management, tracking finances, preparing financial reports, etc. According to the Department of Labor, approximately 8 per cent of about 1.3 million accountants and auditors were self-employed in the year 2008. (*1)

Content Writing/Editing: The Internet has just exploded over the last few years and there is a lot of content on the web that needs writing, proofing, polishing, and presenting. There's a world of opportunity waiting to be explored for those who are gifted writers or have taken courses in publishing and editing. Considering the vastness that is Internet, it's safe to assume there's enough work to accommodate many, many, many writing and editing professionals!

Telephone Nurse Triage: Telephone triage nurses are RNs who respond to health questions over the phone. They rely on their academic background and training to listen to patient symptoms and offer an assessment of their health situation. They also advise patients about follow-up procedures required and may even direct them to appropriate emergency services.

Customer Support Rep: Customer support representatives respond to client calls and troubleshoot problems related to a product or service they have bought. Although people would have you believe that all customer support jobs have moved overseas, but it's worth noting that customer service was among the largest occupations in 2008 with 2.3 million jobs. (*2) The educational requirements are rudimentary at best with many employers hiring high school graduates who demonstrate good communication and problem solving skills.

Childcare: If you love having kids around, childcare services is a great work from home option you can explore. The Department of Labor states that 33 percent childcare providers are self-employed and most of them offer their services from home. (*3) As a childcare provider, you will be required to care for children while their parents are away at work. Not only is the vertical brimming with jobs that offer the flexibility to telecommute, but also most of these opportunities don't require extensive schooling. In fact, it's possible to start a lot of healthcare home-based jobs with a vocational training program at a career school or college.

Here are some potential healthcare careers for stay at home moms, retired folk, working professionals looking for a side career, or just about anyone keen to spend less time on road traveling to work and more time with their family.

Medical Transcription: Those familiar with the healthcare industry would know that medical transcription has been around for a while. However, the profession has evolved a great deal over the years from the time manual typewriters were used by medical transcriptionists (MTs) to transcribe doctor dictations to now when most of them use top of the line, cutting-edge laptop computers to do the job.

Post-secondary training programs in medical transcription may provide candidates the skillset for this job. Such medical transcriptionist courses are available at career schools and colleges and many of them are self-paced online programs.

Voluntary certifications are offered to MTs by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity(AHDI) upon meeting certain requirements.

Medical Billing & Coding: It's one of the allied healthcare professions projected to grow at a much faster than average rate over the next few years, according to the DOL. To become a medical billing and coding specialist, one needs to be good with numbers as the job involves assigning standardized codes to various clinical procedures and using these codified documents for the billing process.

Medical coders and billers can perform their job independently from home and require only limited interaction with healthcare providers and health insurance companies.

Aspirants can gain the skills for this job through a vocational training program in medical billing and coding. Alternatively, Associate degrees in fields like Allied Health or Medical Specialties may also provide the required proficiencies to those keen to have some college experience.

Medical Writing: If you have decent writing skills and some clinical experience, freelance healthcare writing can prove to be an extremely lucrative work-at-home career. It will allow you to let your creative juices flow and provide an outlet to the writer in you. At the same time, you will be able to make more than decent money for it. According to payscale.com, freelance writers in the healthcare industry can earn up to $50 in hourly wages.3

There are plenty of avenues that medical writers or communicators can write for including textbooks, journals, white papers, websites, marketing collateral, etc. Joining organizations like the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) may help healthcare writers find freelance assignments.

Telephone Triage: This is a popular work at home profession amongst registered nurses (RNs). It involves RNs offering clinical advice to patients over the telephone. They listen to the symptoms that patients describe and use their clinical knowledge to provide a medical assessment.

Since telephone triage services are mostly offered by RNs, the training requirements for the job are the same as that of a registered nurse - a two-year or four-year college degree or a hospital-administered nursing diploma. Experience in nursing practice may also be necessary to become a telephone triage nurse.

Virtual Medical Assistant: The job of a medical assistant involves performing administrative tasks at a healthcare center. This includes scheduling appointments, maintaining patient records, following up on insurance claims, and a range of other paperwork. A lot of these tasks can be handled virtually from a remote location and may prove more cost-effective, especially for small employers. That's why many independent physicians are trending towards hiring virtual assistants. It helps them trim their office staff and tighten their budgets.

Skills for this job can be acquired through a medical assistant training program from a career school or a two-year college degree.

Sources:

*Ibid
*http://payscale.com/research/US/Job=Freelance_Writer%2c_Technical/Hourly_Rate/by_Industry

Nancy is a 35-year old stay at home mom of two. Is the commute to and from office coming in the way of you spending quality time with your family? Is retired life leaving you totally uninspired?

If your answer to any of the above questions is yes, then it's time for you to start thinking about the possibility of working from home.

The work from home industry has expanded in the last few years thanks to technological innovations that allow workers to do their job and do it well from their homes. Availability of solutions like web conferencing, instant messaging, VPNs and sophisticated email clients have made it possible for virtually any job to be done from home.

The advancement in mobile technology over the last few years has further added to the ease with which professionals are able to work from their home offices.

Popular Work from Home Jobs

Even though almost all jobs - from something as straightforward as data entry to complex management related tasks - can be done from home, there are some professions that are more home-office friendly than others.

And if you are starting over, it's probably best to try your hands at these occupations. The good news is that these home-based careers can be secured with the skillset provided by short vocational training courses. Let's take a deep dive into some such career courses:

Medical Transcription

Medical transcription is one of the most popular home-based jobs. The core job of a medical transcriptionist (MT) is to transcribe taped doctor dictations into text format, although they are also responsible for checking and correcting factual inaccuracies and grammatical errors, formatting the texts in standard styles, and other such tasks.

Consequently, a typical medical transcriptionist training program covers courses in typing skills, medical terminology, anatomy, grammar and punctuation, etc.

Most medical transcriptionist training courses at vocational schools can be completed within a year's time, while some self-paced online programs can be covered in as little as three months.

Virtual Administrative Assistance

A virtual administrative assistant performs the same job that an onsite admin assistant or secretary does, but only, well, virtually! In addition to administrative services, virtual assistants may also provide creative, financial or technical assistance to their employers depending on their qualification and experience.

Virtual administrative assistants work in a variety of industries, including healthcare, and use different channels of communication such as telephone, e-mail, fax machines etc. to perform their job from home.

An administrative assistant course must train graduates in typical office procedures, written and oral communication, MS Office applications, etc. Those who opt for medical administrative assistant training are also taught courses in basic anatomy, medical terminology, procedures specific to healthcare offices, etc.

Medical Coding & Billing

Medical coding and billing specialists are part of the all-important healthcare informatics team in-charge of maintaining patient records. They are responsible for assigning industry-standard codes to clinical procedures performed by physicians and other healthcare practitioners and use these documents for billing patients or their health insurance providers.

If these professionals don't perform their job correctly, hospitals will not get reimbursed for the services they provide and the delivery of healthcare may get seriously hampered. In that sense, theirs is a key function within a healthcare environment.

A medical billing and coding program usually incorporates courses in medical terminology, anatomy, healthcare reimbursement, medical record formats, etc. Vocational training programs in medical billing and coding also include a practicum wherein students get a chance to work on real patient records.

Nancy is a 35-year old stay at home mom of two. In this article I will discuss more about this field and give direction as to what you need to know to make the most out of your training. If you are looking for medical billing and coding jobs it is crucial that you be aware of what you will be performing.

A great many individuals will aggregate both the medical coding and medical billing as one. These are two separate lines of work and it is critical that you have an understanding of that so that you can select which area you would like to focus on at the moment.

Let's assume that you would like to focus on medical billing. As a medical biller you would be employed for the medical facility rendering claims to health insurance businesses or to the Federal government insurance programs such as Medicaid. This is essential so that the office for which you are employed will be able to receive reimbursement for medical, health and preventive care as well as supplies that they have utilized to deal with patients.

On the contrary a medical coder will be functioning with the company making certain that the proper code is assigned to each listed treatment. There are different coding systems that must be grasped and many times when medical coders are learning it is important for them to find the code so that they can make sure that they have not made any errors as this can result is large complications.

When you are browsing for medical billing and coding jobs you may want to know if you are going to be able to do both jobs alongside one another. Most likely this is not going to work since the commitments of both occupations are hugely needed and take up a considerable amount of time. As a medical coder or as a medical biller you are going to have a large amount of work to keep you busy without trying to take on a secondary vocation.

Medical billing and coding jobs are getting to be more and more recognized since people are now able to work on the net from the comfort of their own home, in their shorts. Medical coding and billing has emerged as one of the hottest selling careers in this vertical, attracting aspirants from across the country.

Not only is medical billing and coding capturing the imagination of the young and the restless eager to get their careers off to an early start, but also those who are in search of a stable, yet promising profession.

Medical billing and coding training does not require extensive schooling. The field offers excellent employment opportunities and growth prospects along with decent compensation (a certified medical coder can earn up to $21.50 per hour).*

But most importantly, since the profession forms part of the healthcare industry, it provides reasonable protection against the jolts of recession.

What is Medical Billing and Coding?
Medical billing and coding forms one of the most important functions in the healthcare industry. In fact, this function is responsible for ensuring that healthcare providers are reimbursed for the services they provide to their patients.

Although referred to as one occupation, medical billing and coding are actually two distinct roles each having its own specialty. However, both medical billers and coders work together to make sure that, healthcare providers get paid on time.

Medical coders are specialists who assign standardized codes to the various services provided by physicians or other healthcare practitioners on the basis of which insurance companies like Medicare and Medicaid are billed.

Safe to say, medical coders serve as an important link between healthcare providers and health insurance companies. Because their role is significant for both the parties, medical coders are employed by both, healthcare facilities as well as insurance carriers.

Career Paths in Medical Coding & Billing
Even within medical coding, there are two specialties based on type of patients. Inpatient coders are the ones that deal with records of patients that are admitted to a healthcare facility, while outpatient ones specialize in coding the records of patients who take medical consultation without admission.

Medical billing and coding training should ideally prepare candidates for both inpatient and outpatient coding.

Medical billers come into the picture once the patients' records have been codified. They handle all the billing related documentation and are responsible for making people/insurance companies pay for healthcare services rendered.

How to Become a Medical Biller/Coder
The path to becoming a medical coder or biller is pretty straightforward. Although there are various levels of post secondary medical billing and coding programs available, it is best to start preparing for it in high school itself.

Since the field requires a fair amount of numeric ability, taking classes in algebra and data processing can prove to be extremely valuable.

Courses such as biology and anatomy that build an understanding of the healthcare and medical professions are helpful as well. In addition to this, since medical coders and billers work with sophisticated software, some amount of computer skills are also essential.

Once you have laid the ground, you can choose the level and depth of training depending on your personal goals. You can either work towards a two-year Associate degree in the field from a career school or college or go for a shorter training program in medical billing and coding.

Medical Billing & Coding Training Online
There are legit vocational institutes offering legit Medical billing and coding programs online, which are more affordable than a college degree.

Both a degree and training program should eventually lead to certification from the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC). The organization offers various credentials in medical coding that demonstrate a candidate's level of proficiency in the field.

Alternatively, the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) also conducts examinations that lead to certifications for medical coders.

Sources:
*payscale.com/research/US/Job=Medical_Records_Coder/Hourly_Rate

Nancy is a 35-year old stay at home mom of two. Employers love to see certifications because it shows that the person they are considering hiring has at least a basic level of knowledge in the field. Most certifications require you to pass an exam and then either retake the exam or take continuing education courses in order to keep your medical billing and coding certification current.

The majority of the certifications available are administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Those who have completed a Bachelor's degree are eligible to test for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification. Those who have completed an Associate's degree can test for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification.

AHIMA Certification

The most entry level medical billing and coding certification option available from AHIMA is the Certified Coding Associate (CSA) certification. This does not require the coder to have a lot of experience. Once the coder has a bit more experience, they can then try for the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist - Physician Based (CCS-P) certification through taking an exam. There is also a CHPS (Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security) credential for those who are more advanced coders.

Board of Medical Specialty Coding Certification

Medical billing and coding certification is are also available from the Board of Medical Specialty Coding. Those with at least two years of coding experience can qualify for the Specialty Coding Professional (SCP) certification, and those with three to five years experience can qualify for the Advanced Coding Specialist (ACS) certification. There is also a Home Care Coding Specialist - Diagnosis (HCS-D) certification available through this organization.

AAPC Certification

The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) offers four different options for medical billing and coding certification as well, depending on the area where you work. You are usually required to have two years work experience, but those without this can get Apprentice Certification status upon passing the required exams for the certifications. The certifications are Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H), Certified Professional Coder-Payer (CPC-P), and Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder (CIRCC).

PAHCC Certification

Finally, there is also a Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCC) that offers certifications for those who are involved in specialty coding. Schools and colleges that offer courses in medical billing and coding provide extensive training in this field.

There are many types of medical coding courses that teach subjects such as advanced medical coding, procedural medical coding, advanced medical coding, medical coding and billing associate certificate programs, advanced coding for the physicians office, and advanced procedural coding. These courses are available on the Internet and in classrooms as well. Distance learning is another option that is open to people who want to pursue medical coding as a secondary career.

Some medical coding courses emphasize on topics other than coding such as accounting, business communication and professional development. Another specialization available under medical coding is medical insurance coding training. This course teaches the coder to recognize and apply the correct codes, government compliance regulations, reimbursement optimization, and eligibility for entry-level insurance position.

Personnel who work in a hospital or in a physician's office (other than doctors) have an opportunity to become successful medical coders because of the experience that they possess. Health information management coders work in hospitals and physicians' offices, and many are freelancers. In large organizations such as hospitals and insurance companies, coders work under the supervision of a health information manager or a technician.

As the health care industry is ever- expanding, the career prospects for a certified medical coder are very good indeed. However, a medical coder has to keep up with the continuous changes and advances that are made in this field almost on a daily basis.

Medical Coding [http://www.e-MedicalCoding.com] provides detailed information on Medical Coding, Medical Coding Salaries, Medical Coding Certification, Medical Coding Specialists and more. The codes that are used are standardized for the purpose of insurance billing.

To start a medical coder career, it is recommended that you attend medical coding courses and obtain medical coder training. The courses that are taken to become a medical coder are anatomy and physiology, pathology, medical records courses, HIPAA certification, ICD-9-CM (soon to become ICD-10-CM), CPT coding, and HCPCS coding.

Each version of coding has its own purpose. ICD-9-CM coding pertains to inpatient visits in an admissions to the hospital or a rehabilitation facility. HCPCS and CPT codes are used in outpatient settings such as a doctors office or a clinic. This division is made because more intricate procedures are competed in an inpatient setting and the diagnoses can be proven before the patient is released from the facility.

Accurate medical data must be provided with a diagnosis. Many medical insurance companies ask for a portion of the medical record before paying the tab for certain diagnoses or procedure to prove that the testing preformed was necessary.

Throughout training to become a medical coder, you will be assisted in determining what information surrounding the diagnosis is relevant and what is not. The training you are given in anatomy and physiology and pathology, allows you to determine if a symptom is related to a disease process or if it is coded as a separate entity.

Do not expect to memorize everything you hear in class. The most important factor to pick up on in class is the process of medical coding, the rules of medical coding and the research skills you learn while in school. It is very important to learn the research skills to help manage the guidelines.

After graduating, you can improve the likely hood of landing your dream job by obtaining certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or as a Certified Professional Coder (CPS). This is not currently required; however, it increases your chances of landing a position in medical coding. Employers prefer to hire professionals that hold credentials because to maintain your credentials, you must take a certain amount of continuing education courses. This ensures them that you will be up to date on training and the ever changing medical field.

I did not personally write this article, but I thought it offered very interesting information regarding the medical coding career and education.

Health Care Careers Including Medical Coding

It is not surprising, with an aging population in society today, accompanied by modern improvements in medical diagnosis and treatment options, health care jobs are expected to continue to increase in demand. Diedre Mullaney

Are you considering starting a medical coding program? If you are interested in becoming a medical coder, you can learn about the benefits of studying online, how long it takes, what a typical program covers, and the benefits of certification. With the Bureau of Labor Statistic projecting a promising future in this field, now’s the time to do your research so you’ll be prepared to choose one of the best medical coding programs for your future.

Do you want to learn online? With people’s lives so busy today, many decide to learn in an online environment. This means that you’ll have an interactive, online education on your schedule – the lessons are self-paced, materials are accessible 24/7 and you can log on anywhere you have an Internet connection. Your program will be divided into individual modules, or lessons, which offer structured learning, with milestones that include quizzes, mid-term and final exams, workbook exercises and reading assignments.

Most medical coding programs offer learning in comprehensive areas, such as medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and medical coding. Typically, your knowledge will build upon itself one module at a time, so you are prepared to apply what you learn throughout the program. The length of study can vary, but you should be able to complete a full medical coding program in less than 18 months.

The first area of instruction includes: medical terminology. Receive an overview of medical language, emphasizing basic medical word parts and terminology. Explanations of diseases and conditions are presented along with diagnostic tests and procedures. You’ll know how to recognize basic medical terms with confidence and ease.

The second area of your program includes: anatomy and physiology. You’ll acquire an in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and laboratory medicine. Learn how to identify, pronounce, spell, locate, and understand anatomical terminology in order to describe the structure and function of the body, the organ systems, and the relations of one part to another.

The last area of instruction includes: medical coding. Learn the coding rules for the ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, CPT, and Level II (HCPCS) systems and how to apply these rules when coding patient records. Find out how to use the 2010 coding manuals through hands-on exercises and case studies. Additionally, learn a basic overview of the ICD-10 coding system and pending conversion in 2013.

Be prepared to use your comprehensive knowledge to apply the right codes – HCPCS, ICD-9, ICD-10 and CPT medical coding – and facilitate insurance payments. Your medical coding program will prepare you to utilize code sets to accurately describe procedural and diagnostic services through the use of detailed numerical codes.

Should you become certified? Some programs from accredited schools will prepare you to take a certification exam through a professional association, such as the American Academy of Professional Coders. Choosing to sit for this exam can provide you with distinct career advantages, including higher salary potential and increased employment opportunities.

Do your research and choose a medical coding program that offers comprehensive, timely training that prepares you for your career. A solid educational foundation can provide the tools you need as well as get you ready for the certification exam. Learn online and benefit from a flexible and convenient education that is available when you are. You’ll be prepared to make a smooth transition into your career with a program designed with your needs in mind.

Diedre Mullaney is a practiced medical coder with 12+ years of industry experience. Learn How to Get Started

By Diedre Mullaney

With the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projecting employment to grow much faster than average for medical coders nationwide, now is the time to plan ahead for your future in medical coding. In less than two years, you can complete your medical coding training, become certified and transition into your career. It's a career that's essential to the billing cycle and a must in today's ever-growing health care industry!

So, how do you get started? You need to partner with an accredited school, which means that the school is reviewed and critiqued on a regular basis and has to adhere to high-quality standards. You can start your search with the U.S. Department of Education to verify the credentials of the school you're considering for your medical coding training.

You need a solid educational foundation to prepare for your career. This includes focused, in-depth training that covers: medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, clinical classification and coding systems, health care reimbursement, quality improvement, and much more. Medical coding should address the areas you'll need to know on the job, from today's coding systems to how to follow current coding guidelines.

When considering medical coding, you should determine the learning method that best suits your life and education needs. Many busy adults turn to online programs to get a flexible and convenient program that fits their lives. The benefits of an online education include: self-paced program, no commute time, 24/7 access to course materials, easier life/school balance, and more. Remember to verify the credentials of the online school before you start your medical coding training - make sure your school is accredited!

The next step after you complete your training is to become certified. While certification is not required for your career, it provides you with many advantages, including higher salary potential, increased employment opportunities and respected credentials. It also demonstrates a higher level of knowledge to potential employers. Consider taking the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam through the American Academy of Professional Coders to experience the benefits of certification.

Once you pass the certification exam, you can gain practical experience through an internship, join a professional association and network with professionals in your field. The key is to build up your experience level, enhance your career offerings and just get in front of people. Like any career, it pays to network and increase your list of contacts.

As a professional medical coder, you'll be prepared to work in a comfortable office setting in an administrative role - you'll have no direct patient contact. You can look forward to opportunities to work in a number of health care settings, such as offices of physicians, nursing care facilities, outpatient care centers, and more.

The good news is that the BLS projects medical coding to increase 20 percent through 2018. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), health information technicians are one of the 10 fastest-growing allied health occupations. It is a challenging, interesting career where you are compensated according to your level of skills and how effectively you use them.

Medical billers and coders know this and feel good about the support they provide to physicians, clinics, hospitals, and patients. They know they play an important role in the business office where they are employed. Their work consists of submitting the proper documentation to a number of insurance companies and federal agencies for reimbursement in order for their employer to financially succeed and avoid fraud charges. Their specialized training and expertise lets them find work any place, any time. Numerous opportunities for trained individuals exist in medical offices, clinics, hospitals, insurance companies, and in form of freelance home-based businesses. Advancement opportunities are unlimited!

The U.S. Department of Labor states that continued employment growth for medical coders and billers is spurred by the increased medical needs of an aging population and the number of health practitioners. The Occupational Outlook Handbook reports that earnings vary widely and pay levels are governed chiefly by experience and qualifications.

Healthcare Careers Offer Job Security, Personal Satisfaction, Challenges, and Rewarding Experiences

Many interested in a career in the healthcare field decide to specialize in the medical billing and coding profession. Medical billers and coders are no longer restricted to only the doctor's or dentist's office but are now working in hospitals, pharmacies, nursing homes, mental healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers, insurance companies, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), consulting firms, and health data organizations, or even from home.

These highly skilled professionals are earning impressive wages everywhere they are. Typical duties of medical billers and coders include:

Explaining insurance benefits to patients and clients

Office bookkeeping and other administrative duties

Accurately completing claim forms

Explaining insurance benefits to patients

Handling day to day medical billing procedures

Adhering to each insurance carrier's policies and procedures

Prompt billing of insurance companies

Documenting all activities using correct medical terminology

Scheduling appointments

Other job opportunities for medical billers and coders include:

Billing Specialist

Patient Account Representative

Electronic Claims Processor

Billing Coordinator

Coding Specialist

Claims Analyst

Reimbursement Specialist

Claims Assistant Professional

Medical Collector

Claims Processor

Claims Reviewer

What is Medical Billing?

Medical billing is better described as medical practice management and a doctor's key to getting paid. Although most doctor's offices request that payment be made at the time a medical service is provided in order to minimize billing, every medical office has a need to maintain patient financial accounts and for collecting money.

In a small family practice or suburban clinic this task may be simple and assigned to the medical assistant or nurse but in bigger practices and clinics this is the medical biller's job!

Medical billers and coders usually work forty regular office hours from Monday through Friday on a desk in the billing office or billing department of the professional healthcare office. They must know the different methods of billing patients, understand various collection methods, ethical and legal implications, have a good working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, medical billing and claims form completion, and coding. They also must understand database management, spreadsheets, electronic mail, and possess state-of-the-art word processing and accounting skills, be proficient in bookkeeping, and be able to type at a speed of at least 45 words-per-minute.

The work area of medical billers and coders usually is in a separate area away from the patients and public eye. However, even though they are not involved in the actual process of doctors and healthcare professionals providing medical care they need to possess excellent customer service skills when it comes to making contact with clients, insurance companies, and often patients. Medical billers must know how to explain charges, deal with criticism, give and receive feedback, be assertive, and communicate effectively without becoming confused as the person is asking questions. Patients can quickly become frustrated when trying to deal with healthcare providers and bills over the phone.

While an increasing amount of patient care is being funded through HMO related insurance, where the patient makes a small copayment at the time of service and the doctor bills the managed care company for the balance, a number of patients still need to make arrangements to pay for their medical services over a period of time. Part of the medical biller and coder's job is to contact some of these patients from time to time regarding a past due bill. Incoming calls from patients who have questions regarding a bill are also directed to the medical biller's office. The way s/he communicates over the phone can make or break business relationships.

Other specialties closely related to the medical billing and coding profession are:

Medical Coders/Coding Specialists

Patient Account Representatives

Electronic Claims Processors

Billing Coordinators

Reimbursement Specialists

Claims Assistant Professionals

Medical Claims Analysts

Medical Claims Processors

Medical Claims Reviewers

Medical Collectors

What is Medical Coding?

Every healthcare provider that delivers a service receives money for these services by filing a claim with the patient's health insurance provider or managed care organization. This is also referred to as an encounter. An encounter is defined as "a face-to-face contact between a healthcare professional and an eligible beneficiary."

Codes exist for all types of encounters, services, tests, treatments, and procedures provided in a medical office, clinic, or hospital. Even patient complaints such as headache, upset stomach, etc. have codes which consist of a set of numbers and combinations of sets of numbers. The combination of these codes tells the payer (health insurance companies or government entities) what was wrong with the patient and what services were performed. This makes it easier to handle these claims and to identify the provider on a predetermined basis. In addition, the services rendered (CPT) codes have to match the diagnosis (ICD) codes to justify medical necessity.

To do this correctly for each third party payer choices have to be made from a combination of 3 coding systems totaling over 10000 codes, and which change annually. In addition, a completely new coding system, ICD-10, is proposed for reimbursement purposes in the near future.

Tools of the Trade

CPT books provide all the procedural terminology and ICD-9-CM code books have the most up-to-date information on medical diagnosis coding. The medical coder must stay current on any new ICD-9 code changes that would impact code accuracy and claims submission. HCPCS books contain the complete lists of HCPCS Level II codes with descriptions. They will guide the medical coder through current modifiers, code changes, additions and deletions. HIPAA books help to develop an effective HIPAA compliance plan and DRG books are needed for Medicare's classification of inpatient hospital services based on principal diagnosis, secondary diagnosis, surgical procedures, age, sex, and presence of complications.

Training

Training of the medical billers and coders can range from two to four years of college, a technical school diploma, certificates from correspondence courses, to simple home study programs. Upon completion of such training many coders may seek professional certification.

Though not necessary, it is recommended and national associations are available for the certification processes.

Vocational Training

Professional medical billers and coders are in very high demand. Billing for services in healthcare is more complicated than in other industries. Government and private payers vary in payment for the same services and healthcare providers and organizations provide services to beneficiaries of several insurance companies at any one time.

Therefore, to reach proficiency in this business, basic training, clinical supervision and continued professional development is essential!

Typical Course Requirements are:

Medical Office Procedures

Medical Keyboarding

Medical Terminology

Health Structure and Function

Health Care Records Management

Medical Insurance

Survey of Pathology

CPT-4 HCPCS II, III

Healthcare Laws and Ethics

Basic Coding ICD-9-CM

Basic Pharmacology

Medical Transcription

Externship

National Exam

General Education Requirements

Professional Advancement Opportunities

A recent American Hospital Association survey showed that about 18% of billing and coding positions remain unfilled due to a lack of qualified candidates. Most companies and practices are looking for schooling and experience mostly because of the legal ramifications of incorrect billing practices.

However, medical billers and coders are also able to work independently out of their homes where they established a home based billing office. There are plenty of electronic billing programs available that can be set up through home office computers. Also, there is the possibility to become an independent insurance specialist or consultant who helps patients understand their insurance bills and what they should be paying.

Opportunities also exist as patient account managers, physician office supervisors and management, various types of personnel managers in the healthcare industry, health claims examiners, and medial billing and coding instructors. The more education the individual has, the more employment options are available and advancement opportunities become virtually unlimited!

Professional Certification

As in so many healthcare professions certification in the medical billing and coding field is not required but highly recommended. The days of the single family practice medical assistant or nurse typing out an invoice after office hours are history. Even the smallest offices and clinics have changed to computer billing because it offers greater coding accuracy, saves time, and can be used by administrators and auditors to ensure that visits are being coded to the appropriate levels which increases revenues.

Understandably, these offices and companies are looking for individuals who are certified in their field to ensure the employer that the individual whom they hire is competent and proficient.

There are numerous well known and well respected organizations sponsoring these types of examinations. Intersted candidates should research each one and find the one that most suits your needs: American Association of Medical Billers (AAMB) offers Certified Medical Biller (CMB) and Certified Medical Billing Specialist (CMBS) examinations. The National Association of Claims Assistant Professionals (NACAP) offer Certified Claims Assistance Professional (CCAP) and Certified Electronic Claims Professional (CECP). The examinations for Certified Procedural Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CPS), Accredited Record Technician (ART), and Registered Record Administrator (RRA), are administered through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The National Healthcareer Assosciation (NHA) is offering their Medical Billing and Coding (CBCS) credential.

If your objective is to work for a medical office, group practice, healthcare provision network, or hospital as the medical billing and coding specialist keep in mind that most private practices, organizations and hospitals throughout the country not only prefer but often require national certification as a competency standard.

To learn more about this very rewarding career visit the Medical Billing and Coding Net web site at http://www.medicalbillingandcoding.net

© 2003 Danni R. of the Medical Billing & Coding Net. While the steps may seem simple, each one is very important and skipping just one of them can change your outcome dramatically.

By investing the time and being dedicated to each step, an individual with no prior experience in medicine can achieve a rewarding home based coding career.

Education

Becoming a home based medical coder starts with proper education. Although the industry itself does not require any specific education prior to becoming a medical coder employers do. In order to be considered a candidate for a medical coding job one of two specific certifications must be obtained. Education should be centered around preparing individuals for these certification examinations.

While many educational establishments offer a myriad of coding and billing courses, degrees, and certificates many either partially prepare individuals or require an over abundance of unnecessary educational courses.

When considering enrolling in an educational course ensure the following:

~Education should be focused mainly on medical coding and incorporate only a small portion of medical billing.
~The course should specify that it prepares individuals for CPC certification through the AAPC or for CCS certification through AHIMA (any other certification will not be recognized in the medical coding community)
~Courses should total around 80 contact hours
~Education should focus 80% of class time on the CPT medical coding book and the other 20% on both ICD-9-CM and HCPCS books v
~Basic anatomy and medical terminology should either be covered in the class or be a pre-requisite (these should be the only pre-requisites however)

Keep in mind that courses requiring a two year commitment for an associate's degree can be very beneficial but are certainly not required. Obtaining coding certification and achieving a successful home based medical coding job is certainly possible by taking the right six month coding course.

Certification

The proper education course will fully prepare it's students to sit for one of two medical coding certification exams. While more than two types of certification exist the only ones recognized and sought after by employers nationwide are the CPC and CCS certifications.

The CPC certification stands for Certified Professional Coder and it is offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The second type of certification is the CCS, which stands for Certified Coding Specialist. This certification is offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Each certification requires individuals to sit for and pass their lengthy exam (5 - 6 hours). These exams are not cheap and can be very overwhelming when not prepared properly. Finding an educational course that prepares individuals specifically for these exams is essential.

When considering which of the two certifications to obtain it is important to base your decision on both experience and education.

The CPC offered by the AAPC is the best starting point for individuals who have minimal or no medical coding experience. This exam is slightly easier and offers examinees two attempts for one price. It also caters more to individuals without experience (who are labeled "apprentices") by providing them with job opportunities and externships.

The CCS certification through AHIMA was originally created for individuals who already have two years or more of medical coding experience. While some individuals without prior coding knowledge have managed to pass this particular exam on their first attempt, many do not. This exam is also slightly more expensive and offers examinees only one attempt to pass.

It is strongly encouraged for individuals just starting out in the medical coding field to first obtain the CPC certification through the AAPC, work in the medical coding field for some time, and then if they desire dual certification attempt sitting for the CCS certification through AHIMA.

Experience

Once a recognizable medical coding certification has been obtained (the CPC or CCS) finding a medical coding job is the next step.

As with most careers, individuals with prior coding experience will find this step easier than those without prior experience, but that does not mean it cannot be done.

It is important at this step not jump ahead to step four either. Becoming a home based medical coder requires experience for many reasons. Applying for such positions right away will only lead to disappointment.

Being quick and accurate are what make home based medical coding jobs lucrative, this is because most coders are paid per. chart coded. It is better to learn speed and accuracy while being paid hourly at a physician's office while you are slow and full of questions and then transition when fully prepared.

Since many employers require several years worth of experience, finding that first coding job can be tricky. Try not to become discouraged and make sure you are willing to accept entry level positions.

Many medical coders gain their first few years of experience by working as an extern, taking a part time position, or accepting front desk, secretarial, or medical record positions and then moving into a medical coding or billing role.

Attending AAPC local chapter meetings is also a great way to network with other local coders, learn about job leads, and possibly gain an internship.

Since the medical billing and coding field is so vast you will continually be learning. Never turn down an opportunity to ask questions or offer assistance. This type of experience will be incredibly valuable when you are a home based medical coder working by yourself.

Home Based Medical Coding Career

Most home based medical coders have 2-3 years of medical coding experience. Since individuals working from home work unsupervised and without other associates it is important that they have a full knowledge of coding and billing practices, networking abilities, self discipline and motivation.

While it is becoming more common for physicians to allow an established medical biller or coder in their practice to work from home at times, it is still not a standard practice.

Most individuals who hold a home based medical coding job are independent contractors. This means that the medical coder has signed an agreement with a larger organization that will provide the work and pay for the coder's abilities.

As an independent contractor you are considered self employed. Items such as computer equipment, medical coding books, and office supplies will most likely need to be furnished by you, but can also be considered a tax deduction when filing a schedule 10-40 at the end of the year. Benefits such as medical, dental, 401K contributions, and paid vacation usually are not offered through contracts either and also are the responsibility of the medical coder.

Contracting with a company does allow you to receive a steady flow of work and a reliable paycheck from the comfort of your own home. This also saves on items such as gas, car wear, work clothes, eating out, and offers large scheduling flexibility.

Some companies that contract with home based medical coders are: The Coding Network, Avia Code, and Maxim Health Information Services.

About the Author: 10 years of medical billing and coding experience, home based ER coder, a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and Certified Professional Coder Hospital (CPC-H), the local AAPC Norwalk Chapter founder and president, Certified Medical Assistant, Coding instructor and tutor, and founder of the educational website http://www.medicalbillingandmedicalcoding.com which provides a career guide, educational advice, and answers to common questions for aspiring medical billers and coders.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Kristy_Rodecker

Education for a Career in Medical Coding

Many people may be interested in a professional career in the health care field, such as medical transcription, medical billing or the medical coding profession.
